Accessibility Statement
Vandy Crisps wants everyone to be able to browse and buy from us, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, speech input or other assistive technology. This page explains what we aim for, what we have done, what we know is still imperfect, and how to reach a human if something on this site gets in your way.
The standard we work to
We aim to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, and we test against the newer WCAG 2.2 Level AA criteria as well. WCAG is the standard the US Department of Justice and the courts generally point to when interpreting the Americans with Disabilities Act as it applies to websites.
What we have done
- Every image on the site carries a text alternative. Photographs, product shots and nutrition panels are described; purely decorative images are marked so assistive technology skips them rather than reading out a filename.
- Adding an item to the cart is announced out loud. Screen reader users hear the product, the option chosen and the new cart total, rather than silence.
- Cart drawers and pop-ups identify themselves as dialogs, take keyboard focus when they open, close with the Escape key, and return focus to where you were.
- Every form field, dropdown, checkbox and icon-only button has a name that says what it does.
- Page structure uses real headings and landmarks, so you can jump around with a screen reader rather than reading from the top each time.
- Text and interface colours meet the 4.5:1 contrast minimum.
- Controls meet the 24x24 pixel minimum target size, so they can be hit reliably with a finger, a tremor or a head pointer.
- We removed the third-party accessibility overlay that used to run on this site. Overlays do not make a site accessible, and we would rather fix the underlying pages.
What we know is still imperfect
We would rather tell you than let you find out:
- Some content comes from third-party services we do not control, including reviews, live chat and marketing pop-ups. We patch what we can from our side and raise the rest with those vendors.
- Checkout is hosted and maintained by Shopify. Shopify states that it maintains checkout to WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
- We have tested with automated tools, keyboard navigation and manual inspection. A full screen reader audit with NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver, and a full audit on mobile devices, are still outstanding.
- Older marketing landing pages built in third-party page builders get less attention than the main store, and may lag behind it.
If something gets in your way
Please tell us. We will help you complete whatever you were trying to do, and we will fix the page.
Email hello@vandycrisps.com. If it helps, include the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser and assistive technology you were using — but please do not feel you need to. "The size dropdown on the chips page does not work with my screen reader" is plenty.
We aim to reply within two business days.
Formal complaints
If you are not satisfied with our response, you are entitled to escalate. You can contact us at the postal address below, or file a complaint with the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.
